Silhouettes Of Intimacy – Yeh Dil Aur Unki Nigahon Ke Saaye – Prem Parbat

By  |

Since biblical times nature, flowers, birds, trees, mountains, valleys, rain, mist and so on have been associated with love. Nature nurtures romance. Nature opens up the emotions and the inner world. We always find romantic poems, songs contain description of nature. Some of them give meaningful insight into human conditions. There’s always that hint of a river flowing, green fields, delicate flowers, fresh air, high mountains. They are substitutes for romance, love, emotions, imaginations, beauty.
When in love, the heart tries to connect every possible thing with love or the lover. Your heart is so full of love for a particular person, that you all associate things around you with that person. Sometimes you are so obsessed with your beloved that you see him/her everywhere.

Here’s one funny example – In Satte Pe Satta lovelorn Amitabh says to Hema Malini, “Main bilkul hi bilkul paagal ho gaya hun. Meri kuch samajh mein nahi aa raha hai kya ho raha hai. Mujhe neend nahi aati, raat bhar ullu ki tarah jaagta hun. Har jagah sirf tumhari surat nazar aati hai. Deewaron pe, darwazon mein, matki mein, pateli mein, yahan tak ke roti mein bhi tumhari surat nazar aati hai!!”

But jokes apart, it is that beautiful yearning to be with your beloved again that makes you do all silly things. Sometimes making you look silly too. But that moment is so soaked in love that you hardly bother. More so if there’s serene and enchanting nature around you.

Imagine yourself thinking about your beloved. Enters Lata, the humming bird. Imagine her voice in this rich, green sylvester. Echoing those feelings to the tunes of Jaidev.
Hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm
With santoor and flute to accompany, some matka percussion and guitar too. The swarmandal sends you into a romantic trance.
Ye dil aur unki nigahon ke saaye
Mujhe gher lete hain baahon ke saaye

All I have is my heart which is under the shadows of his constant gaze, and instantly I’m enveloped in the feel of his arms.

It transfers you to the nature’s glory, with mountains meeting valleys at a beautiful juncture. The greenery covered with mist, cool breeze blowing making you shiver more than you are with the effect of love.
The song is from the movie Prem Parbat (1973). The sad part – the reels of this movie got destroyed over time and are not available anywhere. The good part – you don’t need any visuals for a song like this. That’s Jaidev’s at his best. Those who love golden era music cannot remain untouched by his magic. Yet he remains far away from common man’s ears, his commercial graph remains unsuccessful. Jaidev was always crisp, exhilarating and mellifluous when it came to a women oriented song. His tunes were richly textured. Someone whose music we can enjoy even without the visuals.
The beginning of this song has the freshness of mountains, echoing sounds, the effervescence and innocence. The use of santoor and flute Jaidev has made is just out of the world. Look at the way they sync with each other. Based on Raag Pahadi, mostly popular in folk music. Love, separation, melancholy, pensiveness are the highlights of this Raag. The beauty of this Raag – it is an anytime Raag.

Pahaadon ko chanchal kiran choomati hai
Hawaa har nadi kaa badan choomati hai
Yahaa se wahan tak, hain chaahon ke saaye

The wayward sun rays seem like kissing the mountain tops. The gentle breeze kisses the flowing, gushing rivers. All around me, I see the silhouettes of the warmth of our love.

Lipatate ye pedon se baadal ghanere
Ye pal pal ujaale, ye pal pal andhere
Bahot thande thande, hain raahon ke saaye

The dense clouds snuggle and embrace the trees, forming a mesh of light and darkness in this interplay. Giving a refreshing, nipping effect to the roads ahead of me.

Dhadakte hain dil kitni azaadiyon se
Bahot milte julte hain inn waadiyon se
Mohabbat ke rangeen panaahon ke saaye

Like these haunted valleys and free, abandon nature, the hearts also beat joyously, freely. Its like a colourful retreat in nature’s shelter.

Jaidev’s serene music has highlighted the poetry by Jan Nisar Akhtar. It brings out the true essence of the lyrics. The mesmerising composition has the heroine recalling the time she has spent with her lover. She is so much soaked in that love that she sees the shadows or the silhouettes of those moments in the nature. Still feels the intimacy of the precious moments. Undaunted, unseen treasures of happiness and the silhouettes of intimacy!!

Deepa you have written about the song very well. It is a classic Lata solo song. Jaidev’s music takes it to another level.
      Absolutely fantastic.

Dholki (or matki) is also beautifully played. Thanks for the post. For some reasons, that particular period in hindi music industry was blessed with so many talented (and unsung) musicians.
