He is the king of the disco music in Bollywood . He is the Bappi Da of Indian cinema. Bappi Lahiri made significant contributions in Indian cinema both as a music director and as a singer.

Hailing from a family with musical background, Bappi Lahiri was born on 27th November 1952 in West Bengal. His breakthrough in Bollywood came with Tahir Husain’s Zakhmee in the year 1975. In the era of 80s his music became the cult. He popularised the disco culture in India and his pair with Mithun Chakraborty created the disco buzz in the industry. The music of movies like Disco Dancer, Dance Dance, Saheb, Namak Halal, Sharaabi, etc became extremely popular which established Bappi Lahiri as one of the greatest director of his time.

His name found an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records in the year 1986 for recording 180 songs in 33 movies. Bappi Lahiri is a person who introduced and worked with a lot of pop singers. Usha Uthup, Alisha Chinai, Vijay Benedict, Remo Fernandes are the pop crooners the director was often found working with. Not only the pop singers, but Bappi Lahiri has the record of composing music with legendary singers from Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey, etc to new generation singers like Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Sudesh Bhosle, etc including ghazal singers Jagjit Singh, Pankaj Udhas, etc.

The repertoire of music the director has it is built over a span 40 years career in music including 5000 songs in 600 movies in Hindi, Bengali, Odia, Gujrati, Marathi, Asamese and many more. Apart from filmi music, Bappi Lahiri has a magnificent record of composing and singing in private albums with various artists across the country. B9 Digital Studios, formerly known as BL Sound, is Bappi Lahiri’s own music company which he started in 1994.

The 80s saw the reign of the director, though he never lost the touch with his fans and made his presence felt continuously. He composed background score for the movie Maine Gandhi Ko Nai Mara in 2005. He crooned Boombai Nagariya, a Vishal – Shekhar composition in the movie Taxi Number 9211. Well, in 2011 he sang again for the duo, the song Oo Lala Oo Lala in the movie Dirty Picture with which he rejuvenated the Bollywood listeners. His distinct voice is till date loved and is extremely popular among listeners.

Bappi Lahiri is married to Chitrani and has two children. Daughter Rema Lahiri is a singer and son Bappa Lahiri is a music director. Bappi Lahiri’s fondness towards gold with which he adorns himself is a major part of his personality.
