Twinning The Melodies – Songs With A Difference

Twin/Twins – what does the term mean? It can be 2 babies born to a human or animal at almost the same time. Maybe some seconds apart. Or it can also mean double. Or it can 2 similar things. Sometimes it might also mean linking, as we say to twin it with something!! If we further go into more details, twin/twins as in case of babies are of a few types. Identical, non-identical (fraternal), half identical, mirror image. But then there are also Siamese twins, which are also called conjoined twins. In simple words, these twins have their bodies joined. Like in humans, did you know languages also have twins. Some examples – rock and roll, mix and match, null and void, wear and tear. They are catchy because of the alliteration. They form a type of rhythm in words. But the article is about music, right?
What if we have twins in music? Do we have twins in music? Yes!! They come one after another in the film, joined at the same scene. They might be termed as a double header, meaning one song rendered in succession of the another. They are 2 songs picturized one after the other but are independent songs altogether in the same situation. It was really interesting to search for such songs and make a list. The twin songs are not be confused with tandem numbers, for example – the songs from Hum Dono (1961). Abhi na jao chhodkar and Dukh aur sukh ke raaste

1. Madhosh (1951) – Under the baton of Madan Mohan, these twin songs are rendered by Miss Chand and Lata Mangeshkar respectively. (Dil dhak dhak/ Nazron ke chaar)

2. Awara (1951) – The most talked about elaborate dream sequence of this film. Picturized on the ethereal Nargis and Raj Kapoor. Composed by Shankar Jaikishen, rendered by Lata Mangeshkar and Manna Dey. (Tere bina aag/ Ghar aaya mera pardesi)

3. Nagin (1954) – The musical extravaganza by Hemant Kumar and the twin songs rendered by Lata Mangeshkar again. (Sun rasiya/ Oonchi oonchi duniya)

4. Durgesh Nandini (1956) – Another twin song under the baton of Hemant Kumar. Rendered by Lata Mangeshkar and Hemant Kumar. (Mat maaro Shyam pichkari/ Pyar ke rang mein rang le saiyyan)

9. Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971) – Another iconic film with iconic music by R D Burman. Rendered by Asha Bhonsale and Kishore Kumar. (Dum maaro dum/ Dekho o deewano)
