Weddings in India are no less than a festival. Families, especially fathers, save all the money just so that they can celebrate their daughters’ wedding in style. Daughters are said to be very close to their fathers. That’s why we often see a teary-eyed father somewhere amid the fanfare when the time to bid adieu to the apple of his eye.

Bidaai, the ritual of bidding farewell to the daughter, is a mixture of many emotions. For a daughter, it is sadness of going away from the family, excitement of beginning a new life, apprehension of adjusting to a new place and making an impression on the new people. For the daughter’s family it is majorly sadness that their darling daughter will no longer live with them, that she would be a major part of someone else’s life.

1. Babul ki duaayein leti ja – Neel Kamal (1968)
Whenever this topic comes up in any conversation, this song tops the list. It is composed by Ravi and the lyrics are written by Sahir Ludhianvi. It is sung by Mohd. Rafi and is played in the background during the bidaai scene. It features Balraj Sahni and Waheeda Rehman.

2. Babul jo tumne sikhaya – Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994)
This film changed the way people celebrated weddings in India. After this movie, many people included the customs and rituals depicted in this movie in their own family weddings. This song is composed by Raamlaxman and written by Ravinder Rawal, while it is sung by Sharda Sinha. It features almost the entire star cast of the movie. The bride is Renuka Shahne and the parents are Anupam Kher and Reema Lagoo.

3. Chal ri sajani ab kya – Bombai Ka Baboo (1960)
This film shows a very different angle of relationships which was very ahead of its time. The song features Suchitra Sen and Dev Anand. They both are in love with each other but cannot get married to each other as Dev Anand has stolen the identity and living as someone else. This situation makes Suchitra Sen his sister. In this song a heartbroken Anand says goodbye to his love.
It is composed by S.D. Burman and the lyrics are by Majrooh Sultanpuri and sung by Mukesh.

4. Chalo re doli uthao – Jaani Dushman (1979)
This song from the horror movie Jaani Dushman was a big hit. It is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, lyrics are by Varma Malik and it is sung by Mohd. Rafi. It features many characters from the movie, namely Jeetendra, Aruna Irani, Sarika, Shatrughan Sinha.

5. Hamesha tumko chaha – Devdas (2002)
Another ‘different’ kind of bidaai is shown in this song. Here too, the hero is saying goodbye to his love who is getting married to someone else. This beautiful song is sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy and Udit Narayan. It is composed by Ismail Darbar and the lyrics are by Nusrat Badr. It features Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai.

6. Samjhi thi ke ye ghar – Kaajal (1965)
The song is composed by Ravi and lyrics are by Sahir Ludhianvi. It is sung by Asha Bhosle and features Meena Kumari, Dharmendra, Raj Kumar and Durga Khote.

7. Ye betiyan toh babul ki – Na Tum Jano Na Hum (2002)
Composed by Rajesh Roshan, this song is sung by Jaspinder Narula. The lyrics are written by Anand Bakshi. It talks about the bond between a father and a daughter and how daughters are treated like queens by the fathers. It features Esha Deol and Alok Nath.

8. Meri pyari beheniyan banegi dulhaniyan – Sachha Jhutha (1970)
The song has two versions; happy and sad. It is composed by Kalyanji-Anandji, the lyrics are written by Indivar. Both the versions are sung by Kishore Kumar and it features Rajesh Khanna. This song is a favourite among the bands played at the wedding processions across India.

9. Babul de do dua – Sajan Ka Ghar (1994)
This song stars Juhi Chawla, Deepak Tijori and Anupam Kher. It is composed by Nadeem-Shravan and sung by Alka Yagnik and Suresh Wadkar.

10. Asa hun tur jaana – Arpan (1983)
Based on a Punjabi folk song sung by Alam Lohar, this song was recreated by Laxmikant-Pyarelal and sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Suresh Wadkar. It features Parveen Babi, Sudhir Dalvi and Jeetendra.

11. Bidai Song – Babul (2006)
The movie deals with the topic of widow remarriage in the new era. This song is filmed on Amitabh Bachchan who is actually the father in law of Rani Mukherjee and treats her like his own daughter. He wants her to remarry after his son dies.

It is composed by Aadesh Shrivastav, lyrics are by Sameer and sung by Richa Sharma. It actually is a 15-minute song (longest track in Bollywood) but only 2 minutes was used in the film.

12. Behna o behna – Adalat (1976)
This Kalyanji-Anandji number is sung by Mukesh and it features Amitabh Bachchan and Waheeda Rehman.
