Hindi cinema is enriched by his words and his lyrics have created magic on the silver screen over time and across generations. Yes he is one of the most significant lyricists of Hindi cinema who has given a repertoire of his work to embellish the world of Bollywood with beautiful words. Born as Sampooran Singh Kalra and popularly known as Gulzar, was born on 18th August, 1934 to a Punjabi family in Dina, Jhelum District.

With the movie Bandini (1963), Gulzar made his first step towards Bollywood as a song writer with the music director S. D. Burman. Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Aashirwad in 1968 featured Gulzar’s dialogues and lyrics. Khamoshi (1969) came as a turning point in his life which established him as a great lyricist in Hindi cinema. Gulzar enhanced his career by working with music directors like S. D. Burman, R. D. Burman, Laxmikant – Pyarelal, Madan Mohan, Hemant Kumar, Rajesh Roshan, Anu Malik, Vishal Bhardwaj and many more.

Gulzar’s lyrics and A. R. Rahman’s music have also earned lot of popularity on the silver screen. In fact Slumdog Millionaire in the year 2008 brought international fame to the lyricist and the music director. Gulzar and Rahman won the Academy Award for Jai Ho at the 81st Academy award. The same song won the duo Grammy award as well.

Apart from being a great poet, Gulzar is known for donning the hat of a director as well. As a director he directed some fantastic movies based on human relationship and highlighting the social issues of the time. Mausam, Parichay, Aandhi, Koshish, Angoor, Maachis, are some movies which showcase Gulzar as a director.

Gulzar has his command over Urdu and Punjabi languages along with several dialects of Hindi. He has written lyrics and dialogues for many television serials. For his immense contribution in Hindi cinema he has, Padma Bhushan, Sathitya Akademi Award, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and several National and Filmfare awards, to his credit. Gulzar is married to the actress Rakhee and the couple have a daughter Meghna Gulzar who is a director in Bollywood.
