If I were your earring…

The above line says a thousand words even when it is incomplete. It leaves our imagination running and we wonder ‘what if..’ and what actually gives rise to is a beautiful poem of each person for that someone special. There are so many poems that are made on this little ornament of a woman that one cannot count.

Listed below are some Hindi Film songs which play around this jewellery and its association with love, flirting, teasing and pure imagination.

1. Jhumka gira re – Mera Saya (1966)
I am sure that the moment we think about the word ‘jhumka’ this song will pop up in almost every person’s mind. It has made a permanent mark on our mind and heart so much that no other song is as quickly associated as this one. Featured on Sadhana, this street dance is a full on masti song making it a favourite among many. The music is given by Madan Mohan and the lyrics are by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan.

The song is about the loss of the jhumka during a market visit that tells a lot about the secret meeting of the lovers.

2. Mera jhumka utha ke laya – Aaja Nachle (2007)
Featured on the dancing diva Madhuri Dixit, this dance number made it to the top of the music charts of the times; it is beautifully sung by Sunidhi Chauhan. The music is given by Salim-Sulaiman. They have managed to give a fresh makeover for this otherwise typical nautanki song. The lyrics are by Piyush Mishra. This was Madhuri’s comeback film after her small break.

3. Mila hai kisi ka jhumka – Parakh (1960)
This beautiful melody is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and is featured on the very beautiful Sadhana. The lyrics are by Shailendra and the music is by Salil Chowdhary who had also written the story of the film.

The lyrics are so simple yet they convey so much in few words. ‘Mila hai kisika jhumka.. thande thande hare hare neem ke tale… sachche moti wala jhumka …. suno kya kehta hai jhumka..’ It is revealing the details of the lovers’ rendezvous under the tree…

4. Chittiyan kalaiyan ve – Roy (2015)
This song became a super hit the moment it was released in the promos. It was on every girl’s mind and stayed on for a long time. Here we are talking about the golden jhumkas that the heroine is demanding from the hero among the many demands that he has to fulfil once they start seeing each other.

The music is given by Meet Brothers Anjjan, who have sung the song along with Kanika Kapoor, while the lyrics are written by Kumar.

5. Kaan mein jhumka – Sawan Bhadon (1970)
This peppy number is sung by Mohammed Rafi. The music is given by Sonik Omi and the lyrics are by Varma Malik. It is featured on Navin Nischol and Rekha.

The song becomes more enjoyable if we ignore Navin Nishchol’s dancing (if one can call it so).

5. Radha teri chunri – Student Of The Year (2012)
Agreed, not a typical jhumka song; nonetheless it mentions Radha’s jhumka and hence get to feature in the list. Composed by Vishal-Shekhar, this song is sung by Shreya Ghoshal, Udit Narayan and Vishal Dadlani. The lyrics are by Anvita Dutt Guptan.

It is featured on Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhavan and Siddharth Malhotra. Enjoy this young and colourful dance number.

6. Gir gaya jhumka – Jugnu (1973)
This Kishore Kumar-Lata Mangeshkar duet is picturised on Dharmendra and Hema Malini. The music is given by S.D. Burman and the lyrics are penned by Anand Bakshi. The little teasing and romance is so nicely depicted in the song that one just sits and enjoys while the artists perform effortlessly.

7. Main Kolhapur se aayi hoon – Anjaam (1994)
Yet another dance number featured on Madhuri Dixit, this is composed by Anand-Milind and is sung by Sadhana Sargam. Here the heroine is arriving from the city of Kolhapur with all the fanfare, her jhumkas and thumkas. Only Sameer can come up with such rhyming lyrics.

8. Jhumka chandi da – Ghaath (2000)
This wedding dance number is sung by Alka Yagnik, Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan and Jaspinder Narula. The music is given by Anu Malik and the lyrics are by Sameer. Here the heroine is telling her experience of wearing a silver jhumka for the first time and the effect it had on her beau where he was completely mesmerised by it.
