Talat Mahmood – The Velvet Voice

An opportunity for the music lovers to spend an evening in reminiscence of Talat Mahmood. It is the occasion of a book release titled Talat Mahmood, The Velvet Voice, written by Manek Premchand and published by Manipal University Press.

The author of the book, Manek Premchand was born on April 10th, 1950. His strong fascination for movies motivated him to write books on the same. His notable works are- Yesterday’s Melodies, Today’s Memories, talks about life and works of great composers, singers and lyricists of the golden era (1931 to till 1970), Musical Moments From Hindi Films in 2006 lists 435 key songs over 75 years, offering their lyrics, situations in films,  and meanings extensively, Romancing The Song, which was launched on November 2012 which spoke about aspects of song writing in Hindi cinema over eighty years and more. The story of his books does not end here, the last book was well praised by Gulzar who wrote the Foreword to the book, and noted personalities like Ameen Sayani, Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma and more. Not only this but University of California, Los Angeles, informed that this particular book in the Spring 2013 was the major book of referene for their subject Bollywood and Beyond.

Apart from books, Premchand has written many articles. He had a music column in Mumbai’s Afternoon Dispatch & Courier. Currently, On Melody’s Wings, which appears in DNA Jaipur, he writes a Sunday column. Being passionate about Hindi cinema he has always involved himself in the field of music. He has been a Consultant with Saregama India Ltd and has hosted shows on WorldSpace Satellite Radio, All India Radio and the web portal www.bollywoodondemand.com. His records also traces his role as an interviewer with people like Lata Mangeshkar, Khayyam, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Pt. Ram Narain, Sudha Malhotra, Naqsh Lyallpuri, Pyarelal, etc for WorldSpace satellite Radio.

Being a noted music historian, he frequently appears on television and stage shows to share his vast knowledge about the Bollywood. Bollywood Roots by Ndtv 24/7 is one among many such programmes. His contribution to the Bollywood is enormous. An example of it, is a one day event 100 Years Of Indian Cinema—A Musical Journey, presented by him on 23rd February 2013, in association with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai. This event included talks backed by singing, playing, audio visual presentation with ten most significant people engaged with music since 1940.

So an occasion not only to remember Talat Mahmood but also to appreciate this great writer, on his book release. It is organised at the auditorium of KC College, Churchgate, Mumbai. The date of this event is- May 16th, 2015 and the time is 5:30 onwards. The release will be done by L. K. Advani, Ex-Deputy Prime Minister of India, in the presence of his Excellency Governor of Maharastra, Mr. C Vidyasagar Rao with several dignitaries gracing the occasion like,, Mr. Ameen Sayani, Mr. Khalid Mahmood and Ms. Sabina Talat Mahmood, Ms. Sudha Malhotra, Mr. Anu Malik, Ms. Pratibha Advani and Mr. Nanik Rupani. The event will be hosted by Ms. Sadhana Singh. The music lovers and readers are invited to enjoy the audio visual presentation along with the book release.
