Legendary Actor-Playwright Girish Karnad Passes Away

Noted playwright, actor, producer – director Girish Karnad passed away today morning, in Bengaluru, due to prolonged illness. He was 81. Born on 19th May 1938 in Matheran, Girish Karnad wrote his first play Yayati while he was still studying at Oxford, followed by Tughlaq in 1964. He entered into film making later in 1970 with the Kannada movie Samskara. Some of his well known works are Hayavandana, Tabbaliyu Neenade Magane, Nagamandala, Utsav, Kanooru Heggadithi. His noted films as an actor are Sur Sangam, Nishant, Manthan, Swami, Ratnadeep, Apne Paraye, Meri Jung, Ek Tha Tiger and Tiger Zinda Hai. Besides working in Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu movies, he has also done a critically acclaimed Marathi film Umbartha with Smita Patil. Girish Karnad was also seen in Doordarshan serials like Malgudi Days, Indradhanush and a weekly science program Turning Point, where he was the presenter. A Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee, his contribution towards literature in form of translations can’t be forgotten. He was also awarded with Jnanpith Award, Kalidas Samman, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Sahitya Academy award, besides several regional Filmfare awards and National Awards.
Girish Karnad will always be remembered for his versatile acting, his bold playwrights and his literary contributions. Indian cinema will miss him. With his death an era of literature and intelligent cinema comes to an end.
