The time for kite flying is not over yet. The wind is welcoming us to experience its invisible waves, its current and its magic. So launch your kites this season with these ten songs and let your spirits soar high, higher than the kite you are flying and just enjoy the moment and the weather.

1. Kaai Po Che – Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999)
You guessed it right. No collection on kite songs can be complete without this one. You get into the mood of the festival right from the beginning where the words “Kaai Po Chhe” echo in the surroundings. Enjoy this Shankar Mahadevan song composed by Ismail Darbar and let your kite loose…

2. Ambarsariya – Fukrey (2013)
This adaptation of Punjabi folk compares the lover with the kite. Like he roams in her lanes aimlessly, like a kite trying to get her attention. Sung by Sona Mohapatra and composed by Ram Sampath, this number was a favourite among the youth at the time of release. It has that rustic energy to it that takes you into the by lanes of the northern part of India instantly.

3. Maanjha – Kaai Po Chhe (2013)
The lyrics of this song are to die for! Swanand Kirkire has once again entangled our hearts into the web of his words with Maanjha. Amit Trivedi does justice to the song by providing soulful music and vocals.

4. Chhor de sajaniya – Nagin (1954)
This song featuring Vyjayanthimala captures your imagination the moment it starts to play. A stage song, it shows the fun a couple has while flying a kite and how they entangle in each other. Hemant Kumar got the Filmfare award for best music director for this film. Sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Hemant da himself, this song-dance stays with you for a long time.

5. Chali chali re patang – Bhabhi (1957)
This duet by Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar is among the first songs that pops up in our head when we think of kites and bollywood. This peppy number is composed by Chitragupt and the lyrics are by Rajinder Krishan.

6. Yeh duniya patang – Patang (1960)
How beautifully the lyricist has compared the kite to this world. The comparison with the kite’s changing colours and its directions according to the wind with the people changing colours according to the situation is amazing. Again a composition by Chitragupt and lyrics by Rajinder Krishan, this song is a must in this ensemble.

7. Meri zindagi hai kya – Kati Patang (1971)
Well, not a song of festival but nonetheless a song that shows the plight of the kite after being cut off from its beholder. Something the heroine of the movie goes through in her life. Featuring Asha Parekh, this R.D. Burman song tugs at the strings of your heart. Penned by Anand Bakshi, listen to every word of the song and feel for the heroine. It is one of Lata Gems.

9. Meri pyari patang – Dillagi (1949)
Enjoy this combination of Naushad and Suraiyya. The typical words like “haule haule” sound so sweet that you want to listen to it again and again.
