Nine Nights Of Mother Divine
Today we begin with the celebration of Shardiya Navratri. This 9-day festival is filled with various rituals done to please the Godess Durga and her nine forms known as the Nav Durga; Shailputri, Bramhacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kaalratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri.
Some people play raas garba in front of the goddess while some chant her different shlokas and mantras. Different prasads are offered to Her and the atmosphere is filled with the love of the devotees towards goddess and the love of the Goddess towards them.
Here are some of the songs from our Hindi films which are devoted to this magnificent Goddess popularly known as Maa Jagadamba or Maa Sherawali (The one who rides the Lion).
1. Hey Naam Re – Suhaag (1979)
This Amitabh-Rekha song is very popular even today and comes to our mind immediately when we think of Dandiya songs. It is sung by Mohd Rafi and Asha Bhosle. The music is given by Laxmikant – Pyarelal.
2. Main Toh Aarti Utaru Re – Jai Santoshi Maa (1975)
This all time blockbuster is a favorite amongst all the devotees of the mother. All songs of this movie were hit but this particular song which is a form of aarti made a permanent mark on the listeners’ mind. The way Usha Mangeshkar has sung the song and the devotion that is reflected in her voice is so pure and true that you end up either fighting your tears or singing the song along, or sometimes both!
3. Jai Ambe Jagadambe Maa – Krantiveer (1994)
Another popular Garba song from the movie Krantiveer does the rounds every year during this time. The song features Nana Patekar, Dimple Kapadia, Mamta Kulkarni and Atul Agnihotri. The vocals are by Sudesh Bhosle, Sapna Awasthi and Praful Dave. The song is composed by Anand – Milind and the lyrics are by Sameer.

4. Aayo Aayo Navratri Tyohaar – Johar- Mehmood In Hong Kong (1971)
This beautiful song is featured on Mehmood and I.S. Johar. It is a procession in which people are dancing and singing and praising the Divine Mother. The song is sung by Mukesh and Mohd. Rafi, music is by Kalyanji – Anandji.

5. Chale Chale Re Pawan – Heera (1973)
This is a dance number featuring Asha Parekh. It is a nice blend of an aarti and a devotional dance offered to Maa to praise her. It is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and the music is by Kalyanji – Anandji. Although not a very popular song, it is very hummable and it manages to grab eyeballs because of Asha Parekh’s expressions.
6. Jai Jai Hey Jagadambe Mata – Ganga Ki Lahren (1964)
Here we have another Lata Mangeshkar song praising the Devi. It is a beautiful Bhajan which is accompanied with some dance. It beautifully describes that whoever comes to the mother’s door gets everything without even asking for it. The lyrics are by Majrooh Sultanpuri and the music is by Chitragupt.
7. Chalo Bulava Aaya Hai – Avtaar (1983)
This super hit song is from the movie Avtaar featuring Rajesh Khanna and Shabana Azmi. It is sung by Narendra Chanchal who himself is a very big devotee of the Goddess Sherawali, along with Mahendra Kapoor and Asha Bhosle. Almost every procession of Mata has this song and people enjoy saying “Jai Mata Di” along with the singer.

8. Tune Mujhe Bulaya Sherawaliye – Aasha (1980)
This Kaifi Azmi number is sung by Mohd Rafi and Narendra Chanchal while the music is composed by Laxmikant – Pyarelal. It features Jeetendra and Rameshwari.
The devotee will go to any lengths to meet the Mata when she calls him.
9. Maa Sherawaliye – Ek Chadar Maili Si (1986)
This Mohd Aziz song features Rishi Kapoor and Hema Malini. The music is by Anu Malik and the lyrics are by Farroq Qaiser. Here the devotee is asking the Goddess to forgive him for all his sins.
