Hindi film music has now become a genre by itself. It is a great fusion of Indian and Western music. Hindustani Classical music has dominated a major section of this genre. Though most of these songs have been rendered by the popular playback singers, there are a few which have been rendered by the classical maestros themselves. The list of such songs though not a long one stands out from rest of the songs.

The article brings out some such songs from the list. It is a small list of songs. There are many more to be explored and added!!!

Some songs by the well known Hindustani Classical Female singers!

1. Kishori Amonkar: Indian Classical singer from “Jaipur Gharana” known for her thumris and bhajans. She became interested in hindi film music and gave playback for “Geet Gaya Patharon Ne” title song, lip synced by actress Rajshree. Besides this she has also given music for the movie Drishti (1991) and rendered a few songs in it too.

2. Shobha Gurtu : Light Hindustani Classical singer who came to be known as the ‘Thumri Queen’. Famous for her full throated voice. She sang thumris for films like “Pakeezah”, “Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki” and “Phagun.”

3. Begum Parveen Sultana: Hindustani Classical singer of “Patiala Gharana”. Recipient of Padma Shri as well as Padma Bhushan. She has given her crystal clear voice to the songs from films like “Razia Sultan, Pakeezah, Do Boond Pani”, some new films like “Gadar and 1920”. Her most famous songs though remains from the movie “Kudrat”.

4 Aarti Ankalikar-Tikekar: Hindustani Classical singer trained in “Gwalior & Jaipur Atrauli gharana”. She has given playback for Hindi as well as Marathi films. Her songs from the film “Sardari Begum” by Shyam Benegal are well-known.

Here are few songs from the Hindustani Classical Male singers!

1. Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan: A scion from “Patiala gharana”. Padma Bhushan recipient. Has given his voice for this “Mughal-E-Azam” number after much persuasion from its producer and music director.

2. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi: Well known vocalist in Hindustani Classical tradition. Popular for his bhajans and abhangs and for the rendition of ‘khyaal’ form. Panditji has given playback to some of Marathi film songs and Hindi as well. This particular film “Ankahee” fetched him National Best Male Playback Singer award.

3. Pt. Sanjeev Abhyankar: Hindustani Classical singer of the “Mewati gharana”. A disciple of Pandit Jasraj. He has given playback in a few films like “Maachis, Godmother, Banaras and Maqbool”.

 

4. Ustad Rashid Khan: Hindustani Classical vocalist belonging to “Rampur-Sahaswan gharana”. Nephew of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan and Padma Shri recipient. He has given playback for films like- Mausam (2011), My Name Is Khan and Jab We Met”.
