The man who started Roshan Legacy – The Great Composer Roshan

Better known as Roshan, Roshanlal Nagrath was born on 14th July, 1917 and did valuable contribution to Hindi cinema as a music composer. During the period of 1948 – 1967, Roshan enriched the music industry with some of his classic compositions.

Roshan was born in Gujranwala, Punjab which is now in Pakistan and later attained training under the guidance of Pt. S N Ratanjankar in Lucknow. Khawaja Khurshid Anwar gave Roshan his first break as assistant of music composer in the movie Singaar. Kidar Sharma’s Neki aur Badi (1949) though a flop movie for the music director, but Roshan’s music gained him appreciation for the movie Baawre Nain which was released in the following year 1950.

Roshan established his name in the industry also because of his skill to fuse folk music with Hindustani classical music. With this immense expertise he composed hit songs for the movie Barsaat Ki Raat (1960), Aarti (1962), Anokhi Raat, (1968), Taj Mahal (1963) for which he received the prestigious Filmfare award for the best music director category, and many more.

Roshan’s forte was his composition of Qawwalis and enhanced his career by working with singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Hemant Kumar, lyricist like Majrooh Sultanpuri and other legends. Roshan died in 1967 at the early age of 50, survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter. He was the father of the actor/ director and music director Rakesh and Rajesh Roshan respectively and the grandfather of the actor Hrithik Roshan.
