Mumtaz – The Orange Flame On Hindi Screen

By  |

Mumtaz said in an interview, “The love that I’ve received from people should be there for me until my last moment on earth. That would be so wonderful. Allah jaane kab meri ticket kat jayegi. Whatever time I’ve left on this earth I want the same love that I’ve been getting. And I want to be reborn as Mumtaz again.
In her entire career, she was awarded with one Filmfare Award for Best Actress, three nominations, and one BFJA Award for Best Supporting Actress. Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996 while in June 2008, she was honoured for her Achievements in Indian Cinema by the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) in Bangkok.
Mumtaz, was born to Abdul Saleem Askari and Sardar Begum Habib Agha aka Naaz, both of Iranian origin but settled in India, on July 31, 1947. Her mother, Naaz, was also an actress in films. When her family faced financial crisis, Mumtaz agreed to act in films. Her career graph is the perfect story of ‘From rags to riches’. She began the working as a child artist then junior artist, she worked as a vamp, further secured main leads in B grade films, then as a second lead in the mainstream and finally reaching the top and ruling the screen for a few years. During her stint she acted with almost all the leading male artists except Raj Kapoor. Mumtaz was sensitive, quick to understand and translated every nuance onto the screen. She was noticed even in the brief roles she played. She dominated the second lead roles she played, eclipsing the characters of main heroines thus remaining on the minds of the audience.
Like a slow, combustible flame simmering and giving warmth and happiness, Mumtaz simmered like an orange flame on Hindi screen. Orange, a combination of red and yellow. Rightly so, signifies energy and stimulation and is responsible for cheerfulness and happiness. It is the colour of uninhibition, just like Mumu. Full of enthusiasm, vitality and courage. Mumtaz was a risk taker, self confident and flamboyant like the orange colour signifies. Just as the orange colour, Mumtaz made you see the bright side of the things. Screen blazed with her presence giving warmth at the same time.
As if true to her orange flame image she also wore orange clothes majority of the time in the songs.
Do you remember any song where Mumu is wearing this colour?
