Unabashed but Sensitive – Aruna Irani

Born on 18 August 1946, Aruna Irani has acted in over 300 movies in Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati cinema. Although she has mostly done supporting roles, she is undoubtedly one of the best dancers in the industry. Aruna Irani holds the record for winning the maximum nominations (10) in best supporting role category at Filmfare Awards and has received the award twice for Pet Pyaar Aur Paap in 1985 and Beta 1993. She made her debut in Ganga Jamuna in 1961 and went on to be a part of many super hit movies like Caravan, Bobby, Beta, Rocky and so on. She later did some television shows and directed few movies as well. Today, on her birthday we bring to you some of her songs for which she will be remembered for years to come.

1. Meri beri ke ber mat todo – Anokhi Raat (1968)
The actress performs yet another dance number which has a naughty touch to its music and lyrics. This amazing dance number was remixed in 2005 and again, the original remains the hot favourite unanimously.

2. Thoda resham lagta hai – Jyoti (1969)
This song from Jyoti can be called the item number of those times. Aruna Irani grooves to the music so effortlessly that it became an instant hit in those days and appreciated even today. In the year 2000 it was remixed for a video album; although the original is liked by most of the people, young and old both. In 2002, it was used in a single Addictive featuring Rakim by the label Aftermath which was a hit in the US and UK both, but later on went into controversy for copyright issues leading to a lawsuit. The song still remains the winner!

3. Dilbar dil se pyare – Caravan (1971)
The movie Caravan was famous for its music and dances. With dancers like Asha Parekh, Helen and yes, Aruna Irani, it was a treat for all dance lovers. Aruna Irani plays the feisty knife-thrower Nisha who is a part of the caravan and is in love with Jeetendra’s character Mohan. Look how artistically she is trying to woo him in this song.

4. Main shayar toh nahi – Bobby (1973)
Although she has not lip synced this song, watch it only and only for her expressions. The way she reacts to Rishi Kapoor’s words is amazing.

5. Kya gazab karte ho ji –Love Story (1980)
In this song situation, Aruna Irani is trying to woo a much younger Kumar Gaurav. The actress gives a sizzling performance, putting many younger dancers to shame.

6. Dil tera hai main bhi teri hoon sanam – Bombay to Goa (1972)
It is said that when Mehmood started this project with a then newcomer Amithabh Bachchan, no actress was ready to act opposite him and the project seemed ready to be shelved. It is at this juncture that Aruna Irani came to the rescue and happily agreed to play Amithabh’s leading lady. The film is a classic comedy now.

7. Sapna mera toot gaya – Khel Khel Mein (1975)
In this film Aruna Irani plays the role of Sherrie a criminal’s girlfriend, who also a part of his notorious activities. Here, she comes is lamenting the death of her lover, trying to remember the times spent with him.

8. Khushiyon ka din aaya hai – Beta (1993)
In this movie Aruna Irani played the role of a conspiring step-mother so well that she won the Filmfare Award for best supporting actress. Look at her sly eyes when her step son is hugging her with complete love and she is just pretending to love him like a real mother.
