Veteran Actress Shashikala passes away

Veteran actress Shashikala passed away at her residence in Mumbai this afternoon. She was 88. Born in Solapur, Maharashtra, Shashikala was one of the 5 siblings of the Jawalkar family. She started working in the films from the age of 11, to support her family. She met Mallika-e-tarannum Noor Jehan and got a small role in a qawwali in Zeenat (1945), directed by Noor Jehan ‘s husband Syed Shaukat Rizvi, bringing Shashikala into limelight. Her debut though was Chand (1944).
In a career spanning 70 odd years, Shashikala has played various roles. From a child artist to main lead to vamp and character roles. She’s worked with stalwarts like Bimal Roy, V. Shantaram, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, B.R. Chopra, Yash Chopra, Vijay Anand, Subodh Mukherjee, etc. The list of her awards include Filmfare award for best supporting actress (Aarti and Gumrah) and Padma Shri.
