When The Fair Hand Holds The Glass – Songs When Heroines Got Drunk

By  |

Alcohol makes even the most silent people garrulous. It makes some sing, dance and do all sorts of stupid things too. It has been one of the most common ‘inspirations’ for our poets and singers to pour out their emotions. While it is common (in old Hindi movies) to see the hero holding a glass and singing on a street or in a party, there are many songs which show the heroine doing that too. Here are some old songs which show the fairer sex holding the glass and sing their heart out!

1. Rangeela re – Prem Pujari (1970)
The song is composed by S.D. Burman and written by Neeraj while the vocals are provided by Lata Mangeshkar. It features Waheeda Rehman singing and dancing in a party. She is upset that her lover (Dev Anand) is with some other girl.

2. Na jao saiyyan – Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962)
This melancholic song sung by Geeta Dutt shows Meena Kumari aka Chhoti bahu completely drunk and trying to stop her husband from going outside. The song is composed by Hemant Kumar and the lyrics are by Shakeel Badayuni.

3. Peeke hum tum jo chale – Gumnaam (1965)
Picturised on Nanda and Helen, this song is sung by Asha Bhosle and Usha Mangeshkar. It is penned by Hasrat Jaipuri and the music is given by Shankar-Jaikishan.

4. Do ghoont mujhe bhi pila de – Jheel Ke Uss Paar (1963)
The song features Mumtaz and Anwar Hussain. It is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. The music is given by R.D. Burman and the lyrics are by Anand Bakshi. This song was remixed after many years and even a video was shot for the same; but it lacked the sheer vitality that the original song had, both in terms of audio and video.

5. Kaise rahoon chup ki – Inteqam (1969)
This Laxmikant Pyarelal composition is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and is penned by Rajinder Krishan. It is picturised on Sadhana and Helen.

6. Mohobbat mein aise kadam dagmagaye – Anarkali (1953)
Again a Lata Mangeshkar number, this one is composed by C. Ramchandra and the lyrics are by Rajinder Krishan. It is picturised on Bina Rai who dances in the courtyard under the influence of alcohol.

7. Ararara main toh giri re – Post Box 999 (1958)
This song is composed by Kalyanji Anandji and the lyrics are by P.L. Santoshi. It is sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

8. Uthao jaam chalo – Ek Sapera Ek Lutera (1965)
This song is sung by Suman Kalyanpur and is composed by Usha Khanna while the lyrics are by Asad Bhopali. It features Feroze Khan and Kumkum where the latter is singing this song and insisting the hero to drink together and forget all the problems.

9. Sharabi sharabi mera naam ho gaya – Chandan Ka Palna (1967)
Featuring Meena Kumari again, this song is composed by R.D. Burman and sung by Lata Mangeshkar. The lyrics are written by Anand Bakshi.

10. Aaj maine pi hai – Begunah (1970)
Featuring Helen, this song is sung by Asha Bhosle. It is composed by Usha Khanna and the lyrics are by Asad Bhopali.

Say Cheers! Enjoy these songs and do let us know which is your favourite song among those mentioned or even otherwise.
