When Bangles Tell The Tale Of Love

Ornaments are something that a woman always cherishes for her entire lifetime. Those can be given by her mother during her wedding, or her mother in law as a heirloom, her husband as a gift or something that she got for herself simply because she deserved it.

It need not be of a precious metal (if it is, no one’s complaining either!). It can be a simple earring, a neck piece or a glass bangle. That little piece of jewellery holds a special place in the woman’s mind.

Now, if this is such an important aspect of a woman’s life, then it has to feature in our films as well. There are so many beautiful songs that have been built around the ornaments. One such ornament that has captured the fantasy of our lyricists is a bangle. This little round jewellery which is worn in the hands looks perfect on any woman. It looks amazing when made of glass; green being a favourite among many.

Let us look at some of the songs which have sung glories of this piece of jewellery – the bangle.

1. Choodi maza na degi – Sanam Bewafa (1991)
Filmed on Salman Khan and Chandni, this lovely song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and the music is given by Mahesh-Kishore. The hero is upset with the heroine and she is trying to cheer him up by saying that neither her bangles nor her bracelet is of any use to her until her beloved is apart from her.

2. Choodi baji hai kahin duur – Yes Boss (1997)
This Jatin-Lalit composition is sung by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik. Picturised on Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla, this is a dream sequence where the lady is coming to meet her man and that he can hear her bangles clinking giving him a signal of her arrival.

3. Gori hai kalaiyyan – Aaj Ka Arjun (1990)
This Shabbir Kumar-Lata Mangeshkar duet is composed by Bappi Lahiri. It was a major hit at that time and is a fun song where the heroine is teasing the hero, who is a simpleton, to get her green bangles and marry her eventually. It is filmed on Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Prada.

4. Choodi nahi ye mera dil hai – Gambler (1971)
This iconic ‘Choodi’ song of Dev Anand is sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. It is composed by S.D. Burman and the lyrics are penned by Neeraj (Gopaldas Saxena).

Here the hero is requesting the heroine not to break his heart which is more delicate than her bangles.

5. Mere haathon mein nau nau – Chandni (1989)
This Sri Devi dance number was a rage amongst young girls at that time and was played in almost all the wedding parties and ‘sangeet’ ceremonies during that decade. It is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and the music is by Shiv-Hari while the lyrics are by Anand Bakshi.

The heroine is presenting a dance in which she says that her hands are adorned by the beautiful bangles and that her beau will have to wait to meet her as the bangles will tinkle and everyone will know that the lovebirds are in each other’s company.

6. Bole choodiyan bole kangana – Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001)
Another super hit dance number featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor. It is composed by Jatin-Lalit and sung by Alka Yagnik, Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan and Kavita K Subramaniam. The lyrics are by Sameer.

Here the bangles are said to tell the beloved that the heart will not be at ease until the lovers aren’t together and a request to come and take the heart away.

7. Gallan goodiyan – Dil Dhadakne Do (2015)
Here the bangles are from a special place; they are Amritsari Choodiyan. Sung by Shankar Mahadevan, Yashita Sharma, Farhan Akhtar, Sukhwinder Singh and Manish Kumar Tipu, it is composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy while the lyrics are by Javed Akhtar. Yet another foot-tapping dance number.

8. Morni baga ma – Lamhe (1991)
Another Sri Devi dance number, this song is inspired by Rajasthani folk music. It is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Ila Arun. The music is given by Shiv-Hari and the lyrics are by Anand Bakshi.

The heroine is explaining to the hero that when the peahen calls out to the peacock at midnight, it makes her heart skip a beat, it excites her making her bangles clink.

9. Tere haathon mein pehna ke chudiyan – Jaani Dushman (1979)
This Mohammed Rafi-Asha Bhosle song is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. It is featured on Jeetendrea and Neetu Singh. It is a typical wedding party song where the groom takes away the bride by gifting her bangles, a symbol of proposing marriage.

10. Bindiya chamkegi choodi khankegi – Do Raaste (1969)
Another hit number by Lata Mangeshkar, this song is featured on Rajesh Khanna and the very beautiful Mumtaz. It is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal and the lyrics are by Anand Bakshi.

Here the heroine is teasing the hero by saying that she will dress up beautifully by wearing the bindi and bangles and the bangles will make a noise and will break his sleep, yet she would do that no matter what.

11. Title song – Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan (1967)
This Asha Bhosle number is composed by Shankar-Jaikishan and the lyrics are penned by Shailendra. As said earlier, bangles (especially green glass bangles) are a symbol of getting married or being married. Here the heroine is thinking of her beau and imagining that he will gift her green bangles and she would be his forever.
