Udit Narayan is one of the most prominent, loved and successful singers of Bollywood He has delivered many hits throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. 1. Papa Kehta Hain – Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988)
This breakthrough song from 1988 Blockbuster Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak made Aamir Khan a teen idol. The star in the waiting grooved to the tune of this youthful anthem. Udit Narayan in his voice expressed the emotions to the core and won his maiden Filmfare Award for Best Playback Singer. The lyrics were penned by the senior lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri showing his versatility. Anand Milind directed the music. The audio of the movie was released on 1st March, 1988. 2. Mujhe Neend Na Aaye – Dil (1990)
This super romantic track shot to the top of the charts as soon it was released. The first time on screen pairing of Aamir Khan and Madhuri Dixit spiced up the success of the film. 3. Title Track – Deewana Mujhsa Nahin (1990)
The film had the same set of music directors, lyricist, and lead actors as the previous movie Dil, who collaborated for the second time. Anand Milind directed the music, while Sameer penned the lyrics. It was a different experience for Udit Narayan singing this song according to his interview in Lehren. The track was different from regular love songs and had a rock n roll feel to it. The track became an instant hit amongst youngsters. The video can be viewed here.
4. Arre Yaaron Mere Pyaaro – Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander (1992)
Mansoor Khan’s Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander gained cult status over the years. The collaboration of Majrooh Sultanpuri and Music Director Duo Jatin- Lalit created magic with an extremely popular soundtrack for the movie. The album had many hits including the timeless classic Pehla Nasha. Arre Yaaron Mere Pyaaro remains one of most popular and remembered tracks amongst the audience of the 90s. 5. Dheere Dheere- Baazi (1995)
The 1995 action thriller Baazi featured Aamir Khan as a cop for the first time in Indian cinema. The core music team comprised of Anand Milind as Music Director, Sameer as Lyricist while Udit Narayan added the magic of his voice to this composition featuring Mamta Kulkarni and Aamir Khan. 6. Kya Kare Kya Na Kare – Rangeela (1995)
The movie had Aamir Khan collaborating with Ram Gopal Varma and A.R.Rahman for the first time. The diction, dialogue delivery and body language of Aamir’s character Munna was very much expressed by Udit Narayan in this song. A finesse indeed. 7. Title Track – Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995)
An emotional movie featuring Aamir Khan and Manisha Koirala, had a very melodious collection of tracks. The music was directed by Anu Malik. The album had a wide range of songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. The title track was sung by father-son Udit and Aditya Narayan, creating a great chemistry for the on-screen performance. 8. Pardesi Pardesi – Raja Hindustani (1996)
Nadeem Shravan created the best selling Bollywood soundtrack of the year. The song Pardesi Pardesi became a chartbuster and is popular across the country till date. The song played a major role in the film’s success. Nadeem-Shravan won their fourth Filmfare Award for Best Music Director, while Udit Narayan bagged his third Filmfare Award for Best Playback Singer for this song. 9. Ishq Hua… Kaise Hua – Ishq (1997)
The film saw the iconic on-screen pair of Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla come together once again. The soundtrack was created by Anu Malik while the lyrics were penned by the noted lyricist Javed Akhtar. Vibha Sharma sang the duet with Udit Narayan.The audio was released on 28th November, 1997 by Baba Music. The video can be viewed here
10. Mera Mann – Mann (1999)
The album was a collection of great melodious tracks. The title track features Manisha Koirala with Aamir Khan. Alka Yagnik joined Udit Narayan for the vocals. Darshan and Sanjeev Rathod composed and directed the music. The songs were written by Sameer. The audio was released on 9th July, 1999 by Venus. The video can be viewed here
11. Mitwa – Lagaan (2001)
Udit Narayan won his first National Award for Best Playback Singer for this song. Aamir Khan became producer with this award winning film. The inspirational song became a hit overnight in the country among the masses. A.R. Rahman created one of the best music soundtrack of Indian Cinema. Javed Akhtar penned the lyrics for this song. 12. Jaane Kyun Log – Dil Chahta Hai
Udit Narayan won his second National Award for Best Playback Singer in a row and his fifth Filmfare Award for Best Playback Singer. The new age music was directed by the famous and versatile group of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. Javed Akhtar penned the lyrics of this amazing song that became an instant hit. The video was shot in Australia and features Priety Zinta along with Aamir Khan. The album had wide variety of songs displaying the flexibility and versatility of the music director. The audio of the movie was released on 10th August, 2001 by T-Series.
