Song Sketch
Jai Jai Shiv Shankar – Mischievous Kishore Kumar Making the Utmost of the 50000 Deal
The song ‘Jai Jai Shiv Shankar’ from the movie Aap Ki Kasam (1974) directed and produced by J. Om Prakash, reveals an interesting secreted story about the stars. Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz starrer film Aap Ki Kasam proved to be a super hit and the songs were blockbusters. The songs of the movie are still sung and enjoyed for they are some melodious numbers. R. D. Burman created magic with his compositions.
Among all six songs in the movie, ‘Jai Jai Shiv Shankar’ became the most entertaining song. The song features Kamal (Rajesh Khanna) and Sunita (Mumtaz) who are seen to be rejoicing after the effect of bhang that they drank at the Shiva temple just before the song starts. The couple seems to be lost in their world of intoxication and amusement. The song is crooned by the legendary singers – Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar.
Apart from the interesting picturization of the song what is more interesting is the story behind the lyrics of the song. R. D. Burman and Kishore Kumar wanted to play a prank on J. Om Prakash who was the director and the producer of the film. The music team was supposed to be paid a handsome amount of 50,000 rupees. Those zeroes definitely don’t have much value today but back in 1974 it was a big amount and a reason to celebrate and be happy. During the final take of the song Kishore Kumar took up the matter of 50,000 and in his imitable voice added on his own discretio nthe lines
Are bajao re bajao
Imandari se bajao
Pachas hazaar kis kaam ke diye hai.
And those lines went into the final song and were recorded. Yes, hilarious and funny Kishore Kumar couldn’t have been better at playing prank. Those lines feature at the end of the song (from 5:19-5:22)and it is filmed on Oscar the dance director who is seen wearing a jacket.
The beautiful usage of the instruments like dafli, dholak and ghunghroo sink perfectly well with the context of lord Shiva. The tune in synchronisation with the music and the mad dancing of the stars instigate the mood of celebration in the audience.
This is only one story out of infinite stories in Bollywood. These trivia about films enables the audience to see the human and non glamorous side of the stars in the film domain.
