The first thing that comes to our mind when we look at Anil Kapoor is that how can a person maintain himself so well even at this age! He turns 56 this year and doesn’t look his age one bit. With a career span of more than 40 years, he is still going strong.

He made his debut in the film industry with a cameo in the film Hamare Tumhare in 1979. Few people know that his acting debut was in 1971 in the film Tu Payal Main Geet where he played the role of young Shashi Kapoor, but the film was not released. Acting in various language films, he slowly made a career graph any actor would be envy of. His first film in Hindi as a leading hero was Woh Saat Din in 1983 where he played the iconic character of a roadside singer Prem Pratap Patialawale. His acting skills were appreciated in Mashaal (1983) for which he also got his first Filmfare Award for best supporting role.

Anil Kapoor has always been famous for giving a little edge to his characters, either in the style or dialogue. His stubble and the tapori look for Mashal, his punk looks for Musafir, a combination of style and funny look in Welcome or the salt and pepper look in Dil Dhadakne do; he was loved in each and every look of his.

He has done myriad roles but was liked by the audience for his comic timing. He has films like Tezaab (1988), Beta (1992), Parinda(1989), Mr. India (1987) and Virasat (1997) in his kitty that showcase the actor’s true potential as an all round performer.

His pairing with Madhuri Dixit was a hit and liked by almost every cine goer. Other heroines who have done some good work with Anil Kapoor are Sridevi and Meenaxi Sheshadri.

Kapoor made his international debut with the Academy Award winning film Slumdog Millionaire in 2008. He later forayed into American and Indian television with the series 24.

1. Zindagi aa raha hoon main – Mashaal (1984)
Enjoy this happy song and welcome life with your arms open. The song begins with the prelude of a mouthorgan. We see a lively Anil Kapoor jumping and enjoying life and he uplifts our spirits to do the same. The composition is by Hridaynath Mangeshkar and lyrics are by Javed Akhtar.
Kapoor plays a young man from the slum areas for which he won his first Filmfare Award for best supporting actor.

2. Ek do teen – Tezaab (1988)
This movie comes under the action-romance genre. Tezaab got critical acclaim as well as box office collections. It received many awards, Anil Kapoor fetching the best actor award. This song has two versions; male and female. The female version was a chartbuster. The male version was also a hit; watch Anil Kapoor teasing Madhuri Dixit throughout the song in his typical tapori style.

3. Main teri tu mera – Beta (1992)
All the songs of this movie were liked by the audience. This song is sung by Vipin Sachdeva and Anuradha Paudwal and the music is by Anand Milind. Anil Kapoor plays a simpleton in this movie (somewhere similar to Eshwar) who can do anything for his step mother, who actually is plotting against him.

4. Taare hain barati – Viraasat (1997)
Anil Kapoor displays his best acting in this movie. In the first half he plays a character of a happy-go-lucky, carefree young man who wants to settle abroad and make his career; but the circumstances in his life take a U-turn and his character changes completely changing his priorities and dreams too. Taking over the role of the doyen of the village after his father’s death, he becomes this patriarch, sombre, responsible person who starts living for his village people.

5. Ramta Jogi – Taal (1999)
Enjoy this A.R. Rahman number which was a favourite amongst the dance fraternity pan India. Although it does not have typical dance music, the beats are so catchy that it gives rise to rhythm which complements the contemporary dance style.

Anil Kapoor plays this flamboyant music producer who falls in love with Aishwarya Rai’s character Mansi. The two get engaged but later on Kapoor makes way for Mansi’s real love and unites them. He won the Filmfare Award for best supporting actor. Interestingly, the role was first offered to Govinda but went to Anil Kapoor after he declined it.

6. Sunta hai mera khuda – Pukaar (2000)
He plays an army man in this movie who is wrongly charged by the politicians and faces court marshal for the same. How he manages to outdo them and come clean is the movie all about. Anil Kapoor did not win a Filmfare Award (though nominated) for it but he won the National Award for his stupendous acting.

This romantic number is sung by Udit Narayan, Kavita Krishnamurthy and Swarnalatha. It is picturised on Anil Kapoor, Namrata Shirodkar and Madhuri Dixit.

7. Gallan goodiyan – Dil Dhadakne Do (2015)
Just look out for Anil Kapoor’s dance and energy in this song. He matches every step along with the younger lot Ranveer Singh and Farhan Akhtar. He does not fall short even a bit throughout the song. He plays a businessman who is near bankruptcy and can do anything to thrive in the market and the society; making him vulnerable to situations and relationships.
