Playback Singer Usha Timothy Pays Tribute to Mohammed Rafi
Mohammed Rafi – the name itself conjures up a smiling face, a calm voice and an excellent human being. Just a few days ago, playback singer Usha Timothy had given a small quiz to all her followers on Facebook.
Quiz – Who composed the song Naa kisi ki aankh ka noor hoon?
And everyone gave the answer as S.N. Tripathi, the music director of Lal Quila (1960), rendered by Mohammed Rafi.
But to everyone’s surprise that answer was wrong. the correct answer was Mohammed Rafi himself. Quoting Usha Timothy –
Naa kisi ki aankh ka noor hoon aur Lagta nahi hai dil mera ….. ye dono nazm ke composer Rafi sahab hain. Jab film Lal Quila ke music director S.N. Tripathi ji ne sahab se kaha – aapko iss film ke liye gaana hai, toh sahab ne unhein apne dhunein sunayi. Toh Tripathi sahab ne kaha – Main isase behtar nahi banaa sakta, tab Rafi sahab ne kaha – aaj aapka birthday hai na? Toh meri taraf se ye aapko gift hai!!”
What a revelation, isn’t it? Tells us so much about this human being called Mohammed Rafi. And there must be so many such stories and facts about his work which remain behind the curtains. Taking the above fact into consideration, we asked Usha Timothy ji to write a tribute to Mohammed Rafi on his birth anniversary and she sweetly obliged.
A tribute to Mohammed Rafi in her own words with the top 5 songs of her choice which she sang with him –
मैं उषा टिमोथी. बचपन से ही मैं रफ़ी साहब के साथ रही हूँ. नागपूर में एक शो के दौरान मेरी मुलाकात साहब से हुई. कल्याण जी आनंद जी नाइट में. इत्तेफाक से मुझे उनके साथ गाने का मौका मिला. साथ में हेमंत कुमार, मुकेश जी, मन्ना दा भी थे. किसी वज़ह से female singers नहीं आ पायीं थीं. तब मेरी उम्र सिर्फ 7 साल की थी. मेरा गाना सुनने के बाद सभी ने मुझे मुंबई आने के लिए कहा. मैं तभी से सब के साथ live shows करने लगी. रफ़ी साहब के साथ केवल 13 साल की उम्र में मुझे कल्याण जी आनंद जी भाई के music direction में एक बड़ी फ़िल्म – हिमालय की गोद में, में माला सिन्हा के लिए गाने का मौका मिला, जो सुपरहिट हुआ.
मेरे पिता के देहांत के बाद, रफ़ी साहब ने मुझे पिता का प्यार दिया. 20 साल तक मैंने दुनिया भर उनके साथ शो किए. साहब मेरी बहुत care करते थे. कभी मुझे अकेला नहीं छोड़ते थे. वो मेरे गुरु रहे, हमेशा सिखाते थे. जब मैंने पहला गाना उनके साथ गाया तो बहुत डर गयी थी. लेकिन उन्होंने मेरा हौसला बढ़ाया – “बेटा, मैं तुम्हारा अब्बा हूँ, खूब अच्छा गाओ”. आज भी मैं उनके हाथ को अपने सर पर महसूस करती हूं.
मेरा उनके साथ दूसरा गाना, जब जब बहार आयी….मैं आज भी अपने हर शो में गा कर उन्हें श्रद्धांजलि देती हूँ.
