Song Sketch
Relationship Beyond Time – Haath Chhute Bhi Toh Rishte – Jagjit Singh – Gulzar
A superb soem (poem rendered like a song) by Jagjit Singh – Gulzar combination!!! A poem that touches your heart, nay, rips it apart. Its a monument of feelings. A poem which takes the relationship beyond time. Because such relations are invaluable & imperishable. The original ghazal by Gulzar is a part of Jagjit – Gulzar album – Marasim.
Haath chhute bhi to, rishtey nahi chhoda karte
Waqt ki shaakh se, lamhe nahin toda karte
Jiski aawaaz mein silwat ho, nigaahon mein shikan
Aisi tasveer ke tukde nahi joda karte
Shehad jeene ka mila karata hai thoda thoda
Jaane waalon ke liye dil nahin thoda karte
Lagke saahil se jo behta hai use behne do
Aise dariya ka kabhi rukh nahin moda karte
This gem of a ghazal has been adapted in the movie Pinjar with some alterations in the lyrics. While the original ghazal brings out the pain & the pathos, the movie version further aggravates the agony. The melody & solemnity of the original song is restored in the adaptation!!
Pinjar (2003) is an Indian period drama film directed by Chandra Prakash Dwivedi. The movie is about the Hindu-Muslim problems during the partition of India. The film is based on a Punjabi novel of the same name. Besides critical acclaim, the film also won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration. The Punjabi novel is written by noted poet and novelist Amrita Pritam. It is the story of a Hindu girl, Puro (Urmila Matondkar) abducted by a Muslim guy, Rashid (Manoj Bajpai) whose parents refuse to retrieve her as her chastity is violated, when she manages a run to her parents from Rashid’s home. Pinjar is believed to be one of the best literature written with backdrop of Partition of India. The literal meaning of “Pinjar” is cage but as per the novel it is “The Skeleton”. It has been translated in English by Khushwant Singh. A must read & a must watch!!!
Partition is the scare in the face of humanity. And a wound which can never be healed.
Haath chhute bhi to rishte nahin chhoda karte
Waqt ki shaakh se lamhein nahin toota karte
Jisne pairon ke nishaan bhi nahin chhode peechhay
Uss musafir ka pataa bhi nahin poochha karte
Tune aawaz nahin di kabhi mudkar varna
Hum kai sadiyaan tujhe ghoomke dekha karte
Beh rahi hai teri zaanib hi zameen pairon ki
Thak gaye daudte dariyaaon ka peechha karte
