Sahiba Russ Gaiyyan – Brood In Silence

By  |

Nain nain se kuchh na boley
Raina na darwaza kholey
Chhup chhup ke kyun roye mann ki maina
Pyar ni hota maashe-tole
Sabse wakhre iske chole
Ad jaaye te phir na maane kehna

The silence has pervaded her eyes. She no longer speaks to me, nor does she open the doors of her heart to me anymore. She is not happy with what I have done, and the sparrow of her heart cries at night and the silence of her eyes drizzles out in the form of tears. The degree of love doesn’t change this often. The color of this emotion (here chola means a robe which is compared to love) is so different from all the others and is so stubborn that it doesn’t listen to anyone.

The hero (Kapil Sharma) is telling this story where his beloved has stopped talking to him as he has done an unpardonable offence. And her silence is killing him minute by minute. It is acting like a slow poison as he cannot live without her.
A soulful rendition by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, this Punjabi-lyric song is from the film Firangi. It is composed by Jatinder Shah and the lyrics are by Devendra Kafir.

Ja nahi bolna
Main nahi bolna
Ja nahi bolna ja
Ja nahi bolna…

No matter what I do, she will not talk to me.

In the video we see a very sad Kapil Sharma (and we are not used to see him like this) following Ishita Dutta in a hope to win her heart back. It is shot in a very simple manner which keeps the song as real as it can be. The song belongs to a period film and adheres to the era in terms of look. The song, although in Punjabi, sounds very contemporary. Its composition and arrangement is very today. He cleverly put the old instruments to tune and those I think did the magic. The fact that it does not sound like an old era song doesn’t take away its beauty as the composer has kept its simplicity intact which was always a part of olden times. So it is a nice amalgamation of both the worlds.

Tenu koi khabar nahi mirza
Koi jod khul gaya hai dil da
Hatthan jo ishqe di mehndi
Thodi chhut gaiyaa..

The girl now says this in her mind and wishes that he will understand what she wants to say. She says that you don’t have any idea what has happened. The string that joined our hearts together has become weak as your act has opened some knots which were so strong until now. The henna which decorated my palms with your love has become a little dull and has started fading.

Sahiba russ gaiyan, russ gaiyaan
Sahiba russ gaiyaan

My beloved is now upset with me and I simply cannot take it. Here, the lovers are calling each other Mirza and Sahiba which was a popular classic love story which ended tragically. It seems, they fear that their love story might end that way too and hence the allusion.

Kya khoya, kitna khoya, kya hai paaya,
Kis jagah pe pyaar mujhko leke aaya
Dil mera waang jogiya rulya
Mujhko to apna naam hi bhulya
Phir bhi raaz-e-ishq na khulya
Ki karaan, ki karaan
Chaar dina di jindari
Do din jee ke ruk gaiyaan

He further says that look where his love has taken him. He has no clue of what he has lost, how much he has lost and what has he gained. My heart cries as it has become like a fakir and I have forgotten my name. Yet, I am unable to decipher this secret of love and what shall I do? This life which is already very short seems to have stopped midway.

Such helplessness and sadness is can be brought in by love and only love. The words are so nicely entangled that all the emotions just flow through your heart when you listen to it.

Man’ne nu te man javaan
Par dil chandre nu
Channa das kivein samjhawaan

I will console myself if I have to and I might succeed too. But how do I make my wretched heart understand that my beloved will never talk to me and we might never be together again.

Isn’t it really difficult to make your heart understand the reality? It might be one of the biggest tasks on this earth. So sometimes, we just need wait for the right time and till then let the heart brood in silence.
