Unfolding Romance In Yash Chopra Style

The face of dreamy romance in Hindi cinema, one of the pillars of cinema making, Yash Chopra, certainly gets the credit of bringing that mushy romance on screen. People do look forward to Yash Chopra romance in Hindi films. Beginning his career as an assistant, to his elder brother Baldev Raj Chopra, he did films on totally different topics – Naya Daur, Ek Hi Rasta, Kanoon. Making his debut as an independent director, he chose a bold topic relating to an unwed mother – Dhool Ka Phool (1959). Thereafter choosing some more different topics he went ahead with bringing in the soft touch of romance in his films. He is one such innovative director, producer and script writer who is the reason behind the success of many actors in Hindi cinema. Celebrated as King of Romance, his movies are successful not only in India but have received lot of appreciation in the overseas market as well. Yash Chopra beautified the film industry with his wonderful love stories which are still celebrated as the best ones in Hindi cinema. So momentous was his contribution to Hindi cinema and to the world of entertainment that he was honoured by the Government of India the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and Padma Bhushan in 2001 and 2005 respectively. Adding to his achievements are six National and eleven Filmfare awards.

Songs from his films, be it social or a crime or romantic, burst with melodious romantic music. Lets enjoy some of the romantic songs from the films directed by him in the initial years from 1959 – 1975.

1. Dhool Ka Phool (1959) – His debut as a director under the banner of B.R. Films. The story revolves around a Muslim bringing up an ‘illegitimate’ Hindu child. The music is given by N.Dutta and lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi, this particular song is picturised on Nanda and Rajendra Kumar.

2. Dharmaputra (1961) – Yash Chopra just reversed the theme of his initial, as therein a Hindu family brings an illegitimate Muslim child. Shashi Kapoor’s first film as an adult actor. The story is based on a novel by the same name by Acharya Chatursen. Music is again by N.Dutta and lyrics Sahir Ludhianvi. One of the best romantic song by Mahendra Kapoor.

3. Waqt (1965) – The blockbuster having an ensemble of all known stars of their times, Waqt, pioneered the concept of films with multiple stars, starting a trend followed by other films. The soundtrack which is considered as one of the best till date, was composed by Ravi and lyrics again by Sahir.

4. Aadmi Aur Insaan (1969) – Known mostly for its racy Asha Bhonsle number Zindagi ittefaq hai, this film perhaps is the only one that Yash Chopra did with Dharmendra. Soundtrack is a repeat combination of Ravi and Sahir Ludhianvi.

His next release was Ittefaq (1969) which was a songless film like Kanoon (1960) under the same banner!! The background score for Ittefaq was however given by Salil Chowdhury.

5. Daag (1973) – His debut as a producer, which laid the foundation of Yash Raj Films. It is an adaptation of the novel The Mayor of Casterbridge. The music by Laxmikant Pyarelal dominated the charts. Sahir Ludhianvi is retained as the lyricist.

6. Joshila (1973) – A Dev Anand starrer, this film is one of the few where Pancham has worked with Sahir Ludhianvi. The film was directed by Yash Chopra under Gulshan Rai’s banner.

7. Deewar (1975) – A crime-drama film directed by Yash Chopra, written by Salim-Javed. Deewar tells the story of a pair of impoverished brothers who struggle to survive on the streets of Mumbai. It enhanced the angry young man image of Amitabh Bachchan. It received the Filmfare Best Movie Award of 1975. It also brought forth the camaraderie of Amitabh and Shashi Kapoor, on and off screen.

    Daag was a remake of the film “Sunflower” *ing Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastriaonni with a WWII background
