Genius And Evergreen – Naqsh Lyallpuri
Main woh diya hun, jise aandhiyon ne paala hai. Bujha na paogi, ae, waqt ki hawaon mujhe!!!
– Naqsh Lyallpuri
Remembering his quote, when he’s not between us now but he’ll always be alive through his lyrics. Born as Jaswant Rai Sharma, in the small town of Punjab, Lyallpur (in Pakistan now) he was a child prodigy. Naqsh Lyallpuri’s Urdu teacher was very impressed with his writing skills and used to keep his notebooks to himself at the end of the year just for the shers he wrote at the back of those notebooks. He said “Mere Urdu teacher meri writing se kaafi khush the. Unhone hi mujhse kaha tha ki agar tum literature ki line lekar aage badhte ho,toh tum kaafi safal rahoge.Iske baad maine literature padhna shuru kiya,sher-o-shayari samajhne ki taqat haasil ki,aur phir sher kehne shuru kiye.Ye mere college ke din the.”
His creativity brought him to Bombay from Lucknow. After an initial struggle and difficult days, he found a job in Postal & Telegraph department. He was later introduced by some of his friends to film maker Jagdish Sethi, who was making the film Jaggu (1952).
Thus, Agar teri aankhon se aakhein mila dun rendered by Asha Bhonsle, became his first Hindi film song!!
In the coming years, Naqsh Lyallpuri worked with over hundred and forty music directors including Sapan Jagmohan, Madan Mohan, Khaiyyam, Jaidev and Naushad. He soared to become an important lyricist in the Hindi film industry. A perfectionist, efficient and diligent, his songs are made of everyday language.

Thank you for this. I was looking for ‘Tumhe dekhti hoon…’ but couldn’t even recall the words.
